NABSE Education Imperatives and Legislative Priorities

MEMBERS’ CHOICE or CHALLENGE?

Early in 2020 NABSE launched an initiative to focus its attention on eight critical issues in education: Achievement, Assessment, Compensation, Curriculum, Educator Preparation, Funding, Governance and Instruction.

The goals of this year-long effort are:

to develop and articulate official NABSE positions in each area;

to identify and propose legislation to address specific priorities;

to share NABSE’s positions and priorities with 2020 U.S. Presidential transition teams and Congressional leaders; and

empower NABSE affiliates to develop programming around these issues.

To achieve these goals NABSE identified thought leaders among its membership to frame each issue in a written perspective and facilitate a dialogue via Zoom with other members and interested friends. From these dialogues convened in July and August dominant themes emerged as well as reflective after thoughts. Together they form the basis for the education imperatives and legislative priorities proposed and rank ordered herein by the thought leaders.

Now what?

How will NABSE determine which education imperatives are the most important? What legislation should be NABSE’s highest priority? Will NABSE’s thought leaders get to decide the action agenda alone? Not at all! Every NABSE member desiring to do so will get a chance to agree with the thought leaders or challenge their thinking. When and how?

MEMBER’S CHOICE or CHALLENGE?
(The Process)

Review the education imperatives and legislative priorities for each focus area: Achievement, Assessment, Compensation, Curriculum, Educator Preparation, Funding, Governance and Instruction

Consider the thought leaders’ rankings of each from “most important” to “least important”

Choose to “AGREE” with the rankings or to “CHALLENGE” them

Consult the Glossary of Terms to affirm or clarify your understanding

Re-order the rankings if you “CHALLENGE” and submit them

Visit the ZoomUp schedule and registration Information

Register to discuss ranking(s) for the focus area(s) of your choice.

Register for as many sessions as your schedule will accommodate

Then What?

  • Each ZoomUp will discuss and reach consensus on rank ordering for all education imperatives and legislative priorities
  • Final rankings of education imperatives will be formalized as official NABSE positions on each topic
  • Rank-ordered education imperatives will be incorporated, adopted and published as the NABSE Declaration of Education Imperatives for the 21st Century.
  • Final rankings of legislative priorities will be formalized as official NABSE policy initiatives for action at federal, state and/or local level
  • Rank-ordered legislative priorities will be attached and published as an addendum to the NABSE Declaration of Education Imperatives for the 21st Century

End Game

  • 2020 U.S. Presidential transition teams and Congressional leaders will receive the NABSE Declaration of Education Imperatives for the 21st Century.
  • Legislative priorities will be proposed, structured and delineated as appropriate for consideration by the intended legislative body.
  • All NABSE affiliates will be responsible to implement and promote the education imperatives and legislative priorities, going forward.
