NABSE President's Bulletin
Dear NABSE Colleagues:
Many thanks to those of you who were able to attend our 36th Annual Conference! It was truly a blessed event where we celebrated the one year anniversary of our "Education Is a Civil Right" Initiative. We know that now more than ever, we must accelerate our pace to better educate our children and help them to understand that Education is their birthright, it is their opportunity to rise to the top, it is their key to the future and also that they have a chance to one day lead this country because of their commitment to education. Our conference was dedicated to the success of President-Elect Barack Obama and the commitment to assist him in his endeavors, especially those that impact children.

Our leadership Academies were filled to capacity, and our speakers and practitioners were committed, distinguished leaders. Our conference allowed our keynote and plenary speakers to share realistic and authentic strategies. Reverend Al Sharpton was correct when he said that, "Education will set you free and we must move quickly to support policy and practices that will move our children to the next level". Our prolyphic scholars made us proud, and conferees garnered several promising practices that should be utilized on a daily basis within our various school districts. A NABSE first was a panel of Urban Superintendents who "walk the walk and talk the talk" on an everyday basis.
The students within the Atlanta Public Schools and surrounding districts are to be commended. We especially thank Dr. Beverly Hall, Superintendent of Atlanta Public Schools, Dr. John Thompson of Clayton County Schools and other professionals for their astounding support.
Our fundraising arm, the National Alliance of Black School Educators' Foundation raised over $15,000 in contributions and an additional $16,000 was awarded in scholarships to students.
Our agenda for 2009 is to move expeditiously to support our 44th President, Barack Obama. On Wednesday, December 17, 2008, your NABSE representatives, Dr. LaRuth Gray, Mr. Quentin Lawson, Dr. Carroll Thomas, Dr. Anthony Fears and I met with the Chair of President-Elect Obama's Education Transition Team, Dr. Linda Darling-Hammond and her staff to discuss NABSE's Agenda which includes "Education Is a Civil Right", K-16 Policy, Reauthorization of NCLB and more. We will share outcomes in the very near future.
In February, we celebrated NABSE "Education Is a Civil Right Participation Day" within schools. Please take an active role and secure information from our website at nabse.org for a tool kit to help you plan activities (click on the Education is a Civil Right banner at top of the home page).
It is my hope that you retain your passion for educating our children and that you send to us your ideas and strategies to make everything we desire become a reality.
Grateful to Serve,
Deborah Hunter-Harvill, Ed.D
