CALL FOR PRESENTATION PROPOSALS
Proposals were due to be submitted electronically by Monday, May 17, 2010.

Theme: "Education Is A Civil Right: A Blueprint for College and Career Readiness for Students of African Descent"

The National Alliance of Black School Educators invites proposals for presentations and workshops for its 38th Annual Conference in Fort Worth, TX on November 17-21st.

Conference Strands: The following are workshop strands that will help establish a "blueprint for college and career readiness" at the 2010 Conference. Workshop presenters must choose one of the workshop strands. Please note that proposals will be judged on the relevance to one of the strands.

  1. College & Career Success - Proposals should address strategies and best practices that will provide students with a complete and "well rounded" education that is beyond the common core standards. These strategies should improve the necessary skill-sets needed for today's learner to achieve success in college and, in turn, a rewarding career.

  2. Science & Math - Proposals must present curriculum and best practices that enhance student achievement in the areas of Science and Math. Proposals should include multi-sensory math techniques and up-to-date science classroom applications. Concrete examples and evidence of success through the utilization of proven methodologies are encouraged. Projects that have evidence from rigorous external evaluation will be given preference.

  3. Special Education - (Response to Intervention) - Proposals must address the basics of special education, assessment, inclusion strategies, classroom management, assistive technology and various teaching strategies. Projects that have evidence from rigorous external evaluation will be given preference.

  4. Crossing the Digital Divide - Proposals must demonstrate how the use of digital tools, technology and social media enhances learning, and in turn, have a quantifiable impact on teaching and learning. Proposals should address how students from the "internet generation" learn and offer strategies on how they should be taught.

  5. Connecting Education Research to the Classroom - High-quality education research, based on a rigorous standard of evidence, is vital to helping educators improve student achievement. Education research provides many exciting discoveries about how learning happens. Proposals should address how educators can turn those discoveries into relevant and engaging instructional practices.

  6. Retaining Today's Students for Tomorrow's Success - Proposals must present methodologies and best practices that can lead to the prevention, reduction and elimination of students "dropping out" of the education system and/or landing on the path to prison. Concrete examples and evidence of retention success through the utilization of proven methodologies are required.

  7. Building the Culturally Sensitive Classroom - Proposals must present best practices and proven strategies that lead to the building of a culturally sensitive classroom. Proposals should also address the individual learning styles; the development of effective, research-based strategies that actively engage all learners; and meaningful units and assessments that are differentiated and standards-based.

GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS

  1. All proposals must be submitted via the ONLINE PROPOSAL SUBMISSION FORM

  2. Selection Criteria: Proposals will be judged on their relevance to the strands, content quality, clarity, creativity, usefulness and logical organization of presentation. Presenters should avoid abbreviations and acronyms that don't clearly explain the session's content. It is also important for presenters to describe specific presentation techniques that will be used. Participants will want to know if a presentation is interactive or includes multimedia.

  3. Presentations must be limited to one (1) hour and 30 minutes, unless otherwise noted. Presenters must also be able to present their session at any time during the Annual Conference.

  4. Proposals Submission:
    • Proposals must be submitted via the ONLINE PROPOSAL SUBMISSION FORM
    • The lead presenter and all co-presenters must be listed on the submission form. Any changes to the lead and/or co-presenters must be submitted by August 31, 2010 in order to be listed in the Official NABSE Conference Program.
    • All presentation titles must clearly describe exactly what the presentation is about and must be limited to 10 words. NABSE reserves the right to edit presentation titles. Remember, each presentation must identify with one of the workshop strands.
    • The presentation should identify the audience in which the presentation is geared towards, i.e. teachers, principals, parents, curriculum developers, etc.
    • A presentation abstract must be submitted and limited to 75 words. NABSE reserves the right to edit presentation abstracts.
    • Lead presenters are encouraged, but NOT required, to provide a DVD or a link to a video via Facebook, MySpace, YouTube, etc. that demonstrates their presentation skills. The presentation does not have to be about the subject matter being proposed. Please note that a proposal submission will NOT be adversely affected if a video is not submitted. Please send all DVDs to the NABSE National Office at 310 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE Washington, DC 20003.
    • NABSE will be offering Continuing Education Units (CEUs) to conference attendees. In order to do so, NABSE will need to have each session accredited. In order to do so, NABSE will need for each lead and co-presenter to submit a 50-75 word biography or vitae. The biography or vitae should place emphasis on the presenters' educational and professional backgrounds that warrant them to be able to present the subject matter being submitted for approval.
    • Proposals must be submitted electronically by Monday, May 17, 2010.

  5. Registration: All presenters whose presentations are selected must register and pay registration fees. (All presenters can pay the Single Day registration fee of $150 or the entire registration fee depending on their participation in the Annual Conference. All registrations for presenters must be paid in full no later than April 31, 2010) The lead presenter must be a current NABSE Member. NABSE cannot pay honorarium, travel, lodging or any other additional costs associated with presenting at the Annual Conference.

  6. Audio/Visual: NABSE will provide one podium, microphone, screen, LCD projector and Internet access for each workshop. Presenters may rent additional A/V equipment at their own expense from the conference A/V supplier. An A/V Rental Form will be available on the NABSE website no later than May 15, 2010. Please submit all additional A/V rental requests to the conference supplier no later than Friday, October 29, 2010.

  7. Lead Presenter: NABSE will officially correspond only with the lead presenter. It is the lead presenter's responsibility to communicate all conference information in a timely manner to any and all co-presenters. Remember, the lead presenter must be a current NABSE Member.

  8. Handouts: Presenters can generally expect 50 to 100 conferees, including parents, teachers, administrators and staff. Presenters are encouraged to provide additional hand-outs that can be distributed to attendees who may not be able to attend their sessions but would like the information. Those hand-outs can be dropped off at NABSE Central in the Exhibition Hall which is where they can be picked-up.

  9. Submission Notification: The lead presenter will receive written notification on the status of their proposal electronically and by mail by June 25, 2010. Additionally, a list of the NABSE 2010 workshops and presenters will be posted on the website at that time. Notification on the status of your proposal will not be provided verbally or by fax. The lead presenter of selected proposals will receive a confirmation letter and form that will detail the date, time, and place of their scheduled session. It will also include a checklist and the abstract of the presentation as it will appear on the website and in the Official Conference Program. This form must be signed and mailed into the NABSE office.

  10. Presentation Room-Set-up: Presenters will have access to their presentation room 30 minutes prior to their presentation. If their session is in the first timeslot of the day, or the first session following a program hiatus, they will have access to their room 60 minutes prior to their session. Conference staff will check in on each presenter prior to the session to make sure the set-up is correct and that all A/V needs are met.
