Dr.
Larry Leverett

Larry Leverett was Superintendent of Plainfield Public Schools in
New Jersey prior to becoming Superintendent in Greenwich. He also
served as Assistant Commissioner and Director of Urban Education
in the New Jersey Department of Education, where he was responsible
for implementing the Quality Education Act of 1991. Dr. Leverett
is a member of the Advisory Committee of the Urban Superintendents
Program at Harvard University, and the National Association of School
Psychologists recognized his work in promoting social and emotional
intelligence with its 2003 Outstanding Advocate Award.
"Larry Leverett will bring to the Panasonic Foundation substantial experience
as an educational leader, together with exceptional depth of understanding and
passionate commitment to systemic improvement of public education on behalf of
all children," says Mr. Mondale. "We are thrilled that he has agreed
to take on this opportunity." Dr. Leverett will take the reins of the Foundation
on July 17, 2006. The Foundation's Assistant Director, Scott Thompson, will serve
as Interim Executive Director between January 1 and July 17. Thompson, who is
author of a recently published book on educational leadership and is editor of
Strategies, an issues series on systemic improvement of public education by the
Panasonic Foundation in cooperation with the American Association of School Administrators,
has been with the Foundation since 1996. He previously served as Director of
Dissemination and Project Development at the Institute for Responsive Education
in Boston.
