Marietta English

Marietta A. English is the President of the Baltimore Teachers Union and the Secretary Treasurer of the American Federation of Teachers—Maryland. Born in Bishopsville, South Carolina, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland, at a very young age. She attended that city’s public schools and graduated from Western High School. She also is a graduate of Morgan State University and the University of Maryland, College Park. 

An ardent advocate for the education of children, Marietta, at the age of seventeen, served as a Girl Scout leader and, since that time, has never ceased her involvement as an agent of positive change in the lives of children. She spent three summers working with adults at CHIMES, an institution for the rehabilitation of disabled individuals. 

One who has always enjoyed working with children, Marietta has been a classroom teacher, a consulting teacher, and a mentor teacher.  She has taught all grades from Pre-K through Grade 8, and has worked as a Special Education Instructor. With Delta Soror Agnes Purnell, Marietta directed the Saturday School in Baltimore County.

A member of several civic, social, and cultural organizations, Marietta has served as President of the Metro-Baltimore Alliance of Black School Educators (MBABSE) and serves as that organization’s Liaison to the North American Association for Environmental Education.  She currently works with these organizations to develop a curriculum for environmental education that focuses on the African American male. Marietta is the President of the Maryland State Alliance of Black School Educators and has served on the Board of the National Alliance of Black School Educators as Chair of the Instruction and Instructional Support Commission.  She is the Secretary-Elect of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE). 

A subscribing life member of the NAACP, Marietta has served as that organization’s Youth Director and currently is the Chairperson of the Baltimore County Chapter of ACT-SO.

Marietta is a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority where she has served as Parliamentarian for the chapter. She also has served on several of the Sorority’s committees.

Marietta has served as the President of The Baltimore Teachers Union for the past five years and is responsible for the working conditions of more than 8,000 school employees.

Also very active in the Church of the Holy Trinity, Marietta is a former Sunday School Teacher and served as Superintendent for Sunday school for 18 years. She currently serves as the Senior Warden.

Marietta has been married to Raymond English for 37 years and is the mother of Delta Sigma Theta Soror Chantel English-Murray and Raymond Jay English a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

When asked what makes her most proud, Marietta answers: “My ‘pride and joy’ are my two grandsons Raymond Jr., and Ryan Jacob.”
